Jan 22 – Nurture your belief in your ability to achieve your goals. Attract others into your life who believe in you as well. When you encounter those who don’t believe you can achieve your goals, recognize they are only sharing they don’t have the ability to achieve your goals.

When I was 25 years old and starting my first company, I wanted to create a three-day training program to teach people how to develop realistic environmental tests on their electronics. I was just leaving the Air Force and had been working in this area in my last assignment. I knew there was a tremendous need for this knowledge. I had a neighbor who was in corporate training so I sought her out for advice. She said to me, “Oh dear, you can’t do that – do you have any idea how hard that is?”

I was thoroughly disheartened. I had such respect for her and her capabilities and I thought she must be right. Luckily, I had an incredible mentor in a retired Navy civil servant who had spent his entire career measuring the environmental conditions all over the world. He saw in me the ability to continue his life’s work and wanted to see me be successful. When I shared what my neighbor had told me, he was incredulous. The vitriol that spewed from this gentleman’s mouth was music to my ears and had a lasting impact on me. He said, “That #$&%^ has no idea what you’re capable of. Maybe she can’t create a three-day course on this topic. You, though, have enough capability to create this and many other courses. And you can probably do most of it in the first two hours of the day.” With a mentor like that, I went on to move mountains in my business pursuits.

For your brain, the saying is: “whatever fires together, wires together.” When you take even just ten seconds to revel in your achievement of reaching your goal, no matter how small your goal was, you hard-wire your brain for the fulfillment that comes from achieving your goals. And this is what we are going to do right now. We set a goal as a company on January 2, 2014 – yes, just 19 days ago, to work on getting over 10,000 Facebook fans this year. And yesterday we achieved that. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 – ahhhhhh. We Cheetahs currently at our Portland office are going out to lunch to celebrate!!

Make it a Habit to Finish What You Start

Jan 19 – Create a habit of achieving your goals. Set a small goal every day you can achieve and expand from there to a goal you can accomplish in a week, one you can accomplish in a month, one you can accomplish in a quarter, and one you can accomplish in a year. Then, achieving goals becomes your habit.

One of the most disheartening things to see is people who have lost their ability to dream. Yet it can happen to the best of us. While the causes may be many, one of these can be not completing goals. Why even start when you don’t think you will finish? If this even remotely resonates with you, there is hope. And if you want to prevent it from happening to you, read on.

Completing goals can become your habit. Like any new habit, it takes deliberate practice of key skills. Start by setting a small goal every day you know you can finish. If you like to create long to-do lists – stop that. Create a to do list with your one, most important task of the day. Put it on a small post-it note and put it on your fridge or some place you can see this. Make it your top priority to complete that task. Do this again, tomorrow, and for the next 21 days. Even if it seems like it’s getting too simple. Focus on finishing your one, most important task every single day. At the end of 21 days, celebrate; you have just finished your first three-week goal – to do this every single day.

Perception is the foundation of finishing your goals. Research shows people who believe they are healthy are more healthy and people who believe they have better relationships, have better relationships. The purpose of finishing your small goals is to start to create your perceptions you are someone who achieves your goals. As a child, raised by parents brought up during the Great Depression, I was often reminded that no one could ever take my education away from me. Not only that, but that I could use my education as a stepping stone to create greater things in my life no matter what was going on in the world around me. This advice has stood the test of time.

If you’ve ever been “in love” before, do you remember how much energy you had? It’s the same way with any goal you’re passionate about. When you can activate your deepest desires related to your own goals and your own well being, you tap into a seemingly infinite reserve of energy to bring things to life. Where in your life can you pursue whatever you’re pursuing for hours and hours on end without the need to stop? What would happen if you set concrete goals in this area that could create value for other people?

It takes an act of faith to jump into your areas of intense passion. I spent nine years of my early adult life pursuing advanced engineering degrees. What I discovered, though, was I had a deep love of learning and teaching in unique ways that helped everyone learn better. It took a leap to make the shift from Engineering into the learning field, and it was not an easy decision. What helped me was discovering my personality type. It gave me the courage to move into a field that was more suited for who I was.

This is the same well spring of passion from which we have created with the Cheetah Certified Project Manager (CCPM) program. For which we also have a twinkle in our eye because we know what it can do for people when they learn not only their innate strengths, but how to quickly put those to use to create immense value for others, fast. Over tens of thousands of years of human evolution, our brain adapted to focus on avoiding negative possibilities as a mode of survival. It does, in fact, create immediate benefits to one’s longevity by taking the path where there are most likely NOT lions, tigers, and bears. While fixating on the worst possible outcome and figuring out how to avoid it might help you stay alive, it isn’t the best strategy to help you thrive. Whenever you conceive of a goal you want to pursue, you have started in motion the .05% of what you need to do to actually achieve it. The 99.95% of the work you still have to do is ahead of you. Cheetah Certified Project Managers learn how to manage their emotions when pursuing their goals. Yes, you need the “worry” emotions – and this is why Cheetah students learn how to do Risk Management. But you need something much more compelling to inspire you to go the distance with the work required to achieve your goal. You need a vision of how you’re going to feel once you’ve arrived. Your positive feelings will carry you through giving you that bounce in your step, that jump-out-of-bed excitement to keep persevering day after day after day.

Jan. 15 – Pursuing every goal has a beginning, a middle, and an end. When you can envision what it will look and feel like when you achieve your goal (the end), you significantly increase your chances of achieving that goal.

How you start the pursuit of a goal can help carry you through the rough patches to seeing your way to its completion. It can be any goal – even something as fundamental as cleaning out your closet. Let’s practice this one. Do you have a closet or a space in your home that needs to be refreshed? Maybe it’s a corner that has become a repository of all the little things you don’t know where else to put. Envision what it will look like to you when that space is clean. How will you feel when that space is clean? What can you do with that new cleaned out space? The more you can envision yourself in the end point of achieving what it is you set out to do, the easier it is to stay inspired to see it through to completion.

Learning how to do this creates your neural networks for success. It is called “meta cognition” training. If you follow the exploration of quantum physics principles, you learn the past, the present, and the future can all exist simultaneously on one point. When you look at life from this perspective, you can see more clearly what that underlying mission or purpose of your life is. If you were to condense the sum of all of who you are – your past contributions, your current engagements, and your future dreams – what is the main underlying theme? Or another way to get at this same information is to do the “take away” – if you were to cease existing, what would the world be missing?

The reality is that we are all unique and we all have unique gifts to share with the world. When you learn how to share the uniqueness of who you are in your own unique ways, the world works better. And not just better for you – better for everyone.
